Understanding the Financial Side of U.S. College Soccer

What families need to know about costs, scholarships, and planning ahead

Earning a soccer scholarship in the USA is a life-changing opportunity, but families should know that the financial side of college soccer goes beyond tuition. From pre-college requirements to on-campus living, there are a number of expenses to consider. At Locker 23, we believe in transparency — so here’s a breakdown of the key costs, and how scholarships can help offset them.

Pre-College Costs: What to Budget Before You Go

Before stepping onto campus, athletes and families often face several upfront expenses:

  • SAT or ACT Test — $115–$150
Required for admission to most U.S. colleges. Only one test is needed.

  • TOEFL or IELTS Test — $250
Required if English is not your first language.

  • College Application Fees — $40–$80 per college
    Varies by institution; typically non-refundable.

  • NCAA / NAIA Eligibility Center Registration — $160
Mandatory for athletes competing at NCAA D1, D2, or NAIA levels.

  • Transcript/Grade Evaluation — $150–$200
Some schools require international transcripts to be officially evaluated.

  • Visa & SEVIS Fee — Approx. $500
Includes the U.S. student visa application and SEVIS processing.

Annual Costs During College (Before Scholarships)

While USA soccer scholarships can significantly reduce these costs, it’s important to understand the “sticker price” of college in the U.S.:

  • Tuition — $15,000 to $35,000
Depends on the college, location, and whether it’s public or private.

  • Room & Board (Housing + Meals) — $8,000 to $12,000
Often required for first-year students, includes dorms and meal plans.

  • Books & Academic Materials — $300 to $600
Costs can be reduced by buying used or digital textbooks.

  • Student Fees — $1,000 to $2,000
Covers campus services, technology, athletics facilities, and other resources.

Travel Costs

  • Flights — Not covered by scholarships. Athletes are responsible for travel to and from the U.S., including holiday breaks and summer trips home.

How Soccer Scholarships Help

The good news: very few student-athletes pay the full price. College soccer scholarships in the USA can cover part or all of tuition, housing, meals, and sometimes books. In addition to athletic scholarships, students may qualify for:

  • Academic scholarships (based on grades & test scores)

  • International student scholarships

  • Private or external scholarships

At Locker 23, we guide players and families through the process — from targeting schools with strong financial aid to maximizing scholarship opportunities. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Final Thought

Every athlete’s financial journey is unique. Some costs apply to all players, while others vary by school, scholarship package, and individual circumstances. The most important thing is to plan ahead, understand what’s involved, and know that support is available.
